NTL scum charge a non-direct-debit handling fee BY DIRECT DEBIT
Is there no limit to the perfidy of this company? Bad enough that they charge us extra for paying our bills other than via direct debit, but to then carry on charging us £4/month when we have finally capitulated to their bullying and switched to direct debit really takes the biscuit.

Our relationship with NTL has been a series of payment snafus, all of which involve their accidentally overcharging us by forgetting to stop charging for a second phone line we cancelled, or charging us for both TV+phone and phone. I say accidentally, but I also notice that they have never undercharged us in error.

They also now charge 5p/min for calls to their call centre: they have discontinued their free customer line.

Hard to believe that BT is the leader in customer service but it does seem to be the case from all I've heard.

As far as broadband are concerned Demon are unbeatable, but they won't supply you with an actual phone line.

Indeed. We have Demon for ADSL and Talk Talk i.e. Cartman's Whorehouse for the phone rental. They lost the voicemail when we transferred to them and then it took about a week to re-establish it but apart from that they have been fine (famous last words).

Yes, they did this to someone I work with too. I seem to recall it took about 6 months to sort it out.
I recommend a switch to a BT line and ADSL.

Pipex served me pretty well.

The problem is that I would then have no TV

... unless I get a satelite dish installed as well, which I am reluctant to do. I also don't want to pay the Sky empire any more than I absolutely have to.

Ah, it's the old 'evil' vs 'incompetent' dilemma again :-)
It won't be long until TV over DSL is rolled out I'm sure.

(We have ISTR established that you want channels that aren't available unencrypted on satellite, haven't we?)

Personally, I find it hard to get worked up about Mr. Murdoch and his empire in the cosmic scheme of things but YMMV.

This is EXACTLY the reason I have decided

NEVER. AGAIN.

I will not knowingly be an NTL customer EVER.

I hate to say I told you so, but I'm pretty sure I did (although I think I didn't say it until you'd actually given them your bank details and it was Too Late).
