In order to reduce the clutter in my journal (such as it is) I will now be posting picture links a Tumblr log instead of in LiveJournal.

Darwin at Home is an open source software project that aims to bring the process of evolution into your computer at home so that you can see it working. From the initial projects to evolve locomotion it is now moving towards a more generic framework for evolution in general.’ See the weird creatures that evolved in the informational womb of the computer in this ten-minute mellow video. Material Wonders: Tara Donovan’s travelling retrospective

Large quantities of ordinary things (plastic cups, pencils, etc.) arrayed in huge sprawling organic heaps. Some of the pieces can’t be transported and have to be invented afresh each time they are shown. The exhbition is in the US but you can click through the link to see a slideshow on the New Your Times. (Via Kottke.)

Bandcamp Screencast from Ethan Diamond on Vimeo.

Bandcamp is a free hosted publishing platform for musicians, taking the technical challenge out of setting up a site — transcoding music into different formats, streaming audio, analytics, payment processing, and so on.

Band websites are often pretty bad, hacked together by a friend of the band with Flash and Dreamweaver, or worse, by the record label. There are exceptions, but mostly, it's a sea of Flash intros, popup windows, mystery navigation, and 30-second sound clips.

Bandcamp is trying to change that, giving every album and track its own page with clean URLs and semantic markup, with the accompanying SEO benefits. Even before launch, they're topping Google results for many searches for song titles of participating bands.’ (From an interview with the founder on waxy.org)

Also! They claim that they have cover art that works in iTunes.

I think Jeremy’s camera has the edge when it comes to taking photos of art in the dark. Here are some snaps from here photostream on Flickr—and a few from mine:

I also made a film of the braziers making crackling popping noises in the rain.

I managed to bring my little pocket camera with me to the wedding. This is one time when women have an advantage over the men—you can fit a larger camera in a handbag than in an evening suit’s trouser pockets!

Cultural news burst

My bike now has new rear tyre (with Kevlar for puncture resistance!), brakes, and front brake cable. It now feels super fast. The first time I rode it after getting back from the shop I touched the brakes and almost fell off. :-)

‘Where There’s a Sea’, the second episode of the Starship Intrepid fan series has been released. My baby brother [info]korvarthefox features again as grumpy first mate Dr Garren with what looks like an even more ludicrously antique zap gun than in ‘Heavy Lies the Crown’.

In further cultural news, we went to see The Dark Knight. You know how [info]oxfordslacker and [info]archie used to have endless debates along the lines of ‘What it terrorists burst in and said you had to either marry your sister or a tiger?’ This was essentially ‘What it terrorists burst in: The Movie’, with any number of contrived, soul-wracking dilemmas proposed by the Joker, all depending on (a) assuming his description of the situation was true and complete, and (b) an amazing ability to set enough charges to demolish a building in a matter of minutes (something that professional demolition experts would normally take weeks over).

There is a second opening night of the Caption Comics Collective exhibition tonight at the Jam Factory from 6ish, acting as an introduction to the Caption convention itself, which opens Saturday morning.

We are shipping an interim release at work today, so don’t expect me to be leaving work particularly early.
